BLACK SCREEN
About the Program

Green Bush Dir: Warwick Thornton
The NFSA's Black Screen program provides Indigenous communities and the broader Australian public with access to Indigenous films.
Black Screen has 9 DVD compilations of contemporary Indigenous films which we loan to individuals and organisations for screening events, festivals and community celebrations.
Film Access
The Film Access web page has information about accessing Black Screen's DVD compiles which have a fantastic range of Indigenous films (short dramas, comedies and documentaries). A new Black Screen compile is currently in production and will be available later this year.

Vibe Alive and NFSA in partnership
The NFSA is thrilled at the success of its continued partnership with Vibe Alive festivals in 2009, with great audience numbers for Indigenous short films at Vibe Alive events in NSW, Victoria, South Australia, Western Australia and Queensland. The NFSA partners with Vibe Alive to provide them with access to short Indigenous films that screen as part of the festival's community events and concerts.
In May, over 3,000 young people and their families in Coonamble (NSW) enjoyed the celebrated short films The Djarn Djarns and Green Bush (by director Warwick Thornton of Samson and Delilah fame) that screened as part of the festival's community concert. Vibe Alive’s second year of youth festivals kicked off to a brilliant start with hundreds of talented young people from across NSW descending on Coonamble for two days of full-on excitement, fun and learning. More than 1,100 students attended the festival with youth from the region taking part in friendly competition with others from as far away as Sydney and Newcastle.

Crowds at Vibe Alive at Kalgoorlie
'Vibe Alive Coonamble was a huge success' says Vibe Alive Patron Kerry Hayes. 'It was the perfect platform for students to be motivated, inspired and entertained'.
This highlight has been followed with similar success in other centres where The Djarn Djarns screened to huge crowds: Mildura (Vic) in July (1200 attendees); Port Augusta (SA) in August (1800 attendees); Kalgoorlie (WA) (2200 attendees); and most recently Weipa (Qld) in September (1550 attendees).
Vibe Alive is the new national youth festival in which teams of eight to twelve students represent their schools, competing in singing, dancing, painting and Indigenous sporting activities. They also complete a festival workbook and participate in interactive health and careers expos.
